Milled Silver

Milled silver coins are those produced using a mechanical press such as a flywheel press, or in later years, the steam press invented by Boulton and Watt in the 18th century and its successors. Silver coin production ceased in Britain after 1946 with the exception of Maundy money because the silver was required to help pay Britain's war debts. There has been a considerable upsurge in recent times of silver coin production by the Royal Mint, but only as collectable items as opposed to a circulating currency.

A William III 1696 first bust shilling struck at Chester. Struck slightly off-centre with weakness at the French shield and correspondingly on the obverse. The grade is good fine and the price is £130. A scarce coin.

A 1696E first bust shilling struck at Exeter during the Great Recoinage of 1695-8. Good detail, but slightly pitted surfaces and light tooling in the fields. The grade is almost very fine and the price is £175.

A William III 1697 first bust shilling with gunmetal toning and a thin scratch above the III. The grade is very fine or slightly better and the price is £150.

A 1697 third bust shilling struck at Chester. The portrait has scratches and the fields have been tooled. The grade is fine, but a rare coin. The price is £95.

A William III 1697E first bust shilling struck at Exeter. It has been cleaned, and is a detector find, but has reasonable detail. The grade is good fine and better and the price is £150.

A William III 1698 fourth bust 'Flaming Hair' shilling. There is general wear to the bust and a rim mark at 7pm on the reverse. A perfectly acceptable of this rarity. The grade is Fine and the price is £275.

A William III 1700 fifth bust shilling with circular 0's in the date. There is a trace of wear to the high points of both sides and extensive haymarking. The grade is extremely fine and the price is £450.

A William III 1700 fifth bust shilling with circular 0's in the date. Nicely toned, but a scratch through the hair and even wear to both sides. The grade is very fine and the price is £110.
