S2563, BCW EG-1:EG-g. An Elizabeth I 1576 large bust sixpence with mm. Eglantine. Although the mark is common as a whole, this year is quite rare for the denomination with with the BCW research collection only containing 7 examples. Weight 3.04g. Comes with an old ticket that I have not been able to attribute.
Struck on a slightly ragged flan of good weight, the die suffers from numerous blocked letters. The eglantine mark is somewhat blundered on the obverse and at first glance appears to be ermine, which ended in 1573 and was followed by Acorn. This is possibly an overstruck mark, but inconclusive. A nice portrait and toned.
